When you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong?

You know when you tell a little kid not to do something they do it even more? Yeah. Well two of these items are new, despite being on a shopping ban. Yeah I haven't done too great at that. I tried and then I kinda failed. I definitely will give it another go- during my next 30 for 30 maybe (when will that be, Kendi?!). But yeah. Epic fail.

I was contemplating sending this skirt back, but I ended up falling in love with it. I just love midi skirts! I think it's a great way to incorporate my summery pastels without going overboard just because we're having some nice weather in February! I'm so glad the weather is nice though because it means I can get my collection of midis out- I find them really awkward to wear when it's colder because I don't have a short enough coat and they poke out of the bottom. However, it's been so nice lately I've been going coat-less. Be prepared to see this jacket a lot. With all these summery pastels around, it's perfect. I'm thinking of trying to wear midi skirts every day this week, but I'm not sure if I'll have a chance to photograph them everyday. I hate not having time to blog, and I swear it makes me shop more. I don't wear anything new if I'm not photographing my outfits, so I end up with loads of unworn items in my wardrobe! I can't wait to finish uni!

I've had a really great day today! I don't really know why, but I've just gotten so much done. I've finished my first draft of one of my dissertations- all 6000 words of it, I sorted loads of new things out with my blog and made some great connections, I went to see one of my teachers about another essay am feeling good about my topic and I had two hours of dancing tonight. Good day! I am so excited to finish uni. I'm stressed about all my essays and all the work I have to do, but I'm excited for the dance show and to get all my work finished. And I'm so excited for the summer. My SF interview is next week and I can't wait! I also have my date tomorrow night, #ldnlunch on Saturday, my friend Sarah's birthday and all my friends coming up on Saturday night and a full day of dance rehersals on Sunday. Busy Charlotte!

I hope you have all had a lovely day too!

What I Wore and What I Didn't.

girl next door fashion outfit

girl next door fashion outfit

So yesterday I told you about my Kryptonite skirt and today I have a couple of outfits I created with the skirt. One of them I wore and one of them I didn't. I actually intended on wearing the tshirt instead of the white shirt in the evening, because it seemed a little more laid back. I actually really love these outfits and am glad I didn't give up with this skirt, and also that I managed to get pictures of both outfits. Obviously, the photos of the tshirt and skirt are just going-out snaps from my housemate Beth's birthday- we went out for dinner and then for cocktails.

Those of you who follow me on Instagram will have seen my beehive from Tuesday. It kinds dropped on Tuesday afternoon, but I redid it before we went out and it lasted until Wednesday night! I followed Carrie's tutorial and I think it's awesome. I got so many compliments on it- I'll have to do it more often!

I was talking on Twitter and to Sian the other day about how my style seems to have become quite formal all of a sudden. I call it "job interview chic". I feel like the white-shirt outfit really demonstrates this- I could definitely wear that for a job interview! My style seems to have become quite "dressy"- lots of shirts and blazers and "grown-up" skirts. I'm really enjoying my more "preppy" style- I feel like I almost never wear dresses now and I used to wear them all the time. It's a nice change. An evolution, maybe. The fact is, in a few months time I will be going getting a grown-up job so I need to get used to dressing up more!

Ooh ooh ooh, one last bit of news! I have my interview for San Francisco in TWO WEEKS. EEEEEEE. I am so excited! I am super duper nervous about my interview but I've just been told to be myself. Fingers crossed!

How to cope with your Remix Kryptonite

There's no saying when or when you will meet your remix Kryptonite, but there is a good chance you'll find it in a sales rack/at a thrift store/at a swap. It is likely to be something cheap, something impulsive, something you wouldn't normally pick up. It will seem like a really good idea at the time.
However, when you get it home, disaster will undoubtedly strike. You start pulling things out of your wardrobe. It doesn't go with anything. No, you say, I refuse to give up. More things come out of your wardrobe. More items end up on the floor. It just gets worse and worse. You get hot and flustered and frustrated. You gaze lovingly at the item that just doesn't fit in. I don't know about you, but I am obsessed with remixing. I rarely buy an item unless I can think of five or six ways to wear it with pieces I already have. When it comes to an impulse sale buy, either those ideas go out of the window, or the initial ideas I had in my head just don't work.
This was me on Sunday. I'd met my Remix Kryptonite in the Topshop sale rack on Saturday. It was almost what I'd gone in for, but not quite. I'd actually gone in for the blue version, but found the green for £15 in the sale.
This is my remix Kryptonite...
Doesn't look so scary does it? Just a green, polka dot pencil skirt. But the problem is there already. Green. I don't own anything green and I find it really hard to work with. Wear it with red and you look like a Christmas elf, pink is too bright with such a forest green, blue doesn't seem to work for me, neither does brown. Then there's the polka dots. Gorgeous, of course, but tricky to wear with a printed top. But I was determined.

I took dozens and dozens and tops out of my wardrobe and took a gazillion photos on my phone. Within a few hours, I had some ideas, and the next day, more came to me. I've now worn the skirt twice and have a few more ideas on how to wear it. So, after the success of my Top Tips for Uninspired Days, I bring you How to Cope with your Remix Kryptonite.

1. Ignore everything you know
After buying a green skirt, I googled everything on how to wear green and was advised not to wear certain colours with it. However, I decided not to limit myself with this and try everything. It turned out some of the colours I was advised against really worked.

2. Try everything!
I guess this kinda links in with the first point, but seriously, try everything. Try things out you wouldn't dream of putting together. Seriously, desperate times lead to desperate measures! Worst case scenario, you get a good laugh at your personal fashion disaster. Best case, you create something awesome!

3. Get yo Google on
I heard Kate Middleton had this exact skirt, so I knew it would be all over the internet. Once I had a look-see who else had worn the exact skirt, I then searched my usual haunts- Chictopia, Lookbook, Pinterest, Polyvore etc. for inspiration on both green skirts and polka dot pencil skirts. It definitely gave me ideas I wouldn't have thought up by myself!

4. Step away from it
Sometimes, you just need an inspiration break. Put it down, go away for a bit, flick through a magazine, read some blogs. Inspiration usually comes when you least expect it! (For me, it usually comes right before I go to sleep, anyone else have that?!)

5. Don't be afraid to "give up"
For me, giving up means pairing with a black tank top or a white tshirt, but it can also mean wearing your new top with jeans or something else simple. Sometimes things just need something simple to really stand out. If you do end up wearing it with something simple, have a play with jackets or cardigans, or mix up textures to keep it interesting. This skirt in particular looks fab with a black tank top but I know I find it hard to keep it simple! Sometimes simple is best!

Tomorrow I will be showing you a couple of outfits I've worn with my Kryptonite skirt!
How do you remix your difficult-to-wear items?

Steady young hands, meticulous plans

Before I say anything else, I want to apologise for my absence last week! I don't know if it was just a really bad cold, a bit of flu or a bug but I just felt absolutely terrible for over a week. Last week was kinda a total write- off really. I'm hoping to have a really productive week to make up for it! I had an absolutely lovely time at home though- except for the fact that I felt lousy the whole time and did no uni work in favour of my kindle! It was definitely what I needed though- a few days off. Not long left of uni now- just the final slog for a few more weeks and then I'm done! So far there's not a lot going on on the job front, but I'm just focusing on the right-now at the moment. If I don't have a job secured for when I get back from America, I'm going to start looking again when I get back and maybe just intern for a bit while I wait for something to come up. It's a scary thought, and I don't want to move home, but I know it's the right thing to do until I find my feet.

Speaking of feet, what do you think of my new boots?! I love them! I got them (and the same pair in brown!) from the lovely folk at Clothing at Tesco and they are definitely my new favourites. They go with everything but are just a little bit smarter than my everyday boots. The skirt is also new. My Mum and I absolutely scored at Topshop over the weekend. She bought me three skirts in the Topshop sale- one was £15 and this one, and another were only £5! I've been after a pleated skirt like this for ages and the colour is so gorgeous. The £15 skirt is this one in green (which I believe K. Middy has!) and the other is a gorgeous black pencil skirt which is amazing but so tight I had to practice sitting down without splitting the seams! Funny story though, my Mum bought a blue boucle jacket in the sale too (in fact, the same one as Carrie!) and later in the day I found a picture of Kate Middleton in the skirt I'd just bought and the jacket she'd bought! How on-trend are we?!

Well I've got a crazy busy week this week, but I need it after last week! It's my housemate Beth's birthday tomorrow (Happy Birthday, Beth!) and I've just made her some Nutella brownies. We're going out for dinner tomorrow and then out on Friday. I also have a date this week! Remember I told you I went on a charity Take Me Out on Valentine's Day? Well, I got picked so I have a date! Admittedly, I'd met the guy before I said I'd keep my light on for him so we could have a free meal, but there were 3 other girls left at the end with their lights on so I did feel a bit special I got picked! I haven't been on a date for a while so I'm quite excited!

girl next door fashion outfit

Well I'm going to go to bed with my Kindle! Thank you for all your book recommendations- I've added a lot of them to my wish list. I'm currently reading Room by Emma Donoghue. I've got a few ideas for posts this week so hopefully I'd get back to posting properly soon. Thanks for all your messages and support and never-ending loveliness!

Love for my Kindle

girl next door fashion outfit girl next door fashion outfit

So, I have still been feeling lousy and came home last night instead of today because I literally couldn't do much except sleep and eat and read.
It's been lovely to be home, especially because of one little thing- my Kindle.
I asked for one for my birthday but yesterday, after 3 days of only having the energy to read, I finished the last novel of my university career, and just felt completely lost. As a literature student, I've spent the last 4 years reading a book (or two) a week, every week. Every week meant a new book to push myself through. Hours and hours of reading. Now it was over.
I initially suggested getting my present early yesterday, and was half joking. But before I knew it my parents had agreed it was a good idea to give me something to do when I wasn't quite tired enough to sleep but too sick to do much else.
So yesterday, just after getting off the train, my Mum walked out of Tesco with a bag. My kindle.
I opened it and plugged it in, and I don't think I've put it down since.
I'm 24 hours I have read two books- The Fault in Our Stars (recommended to me by Maggie) and then today Before I Go To Sleep.
I enjoyed The Fault in Our Stars. It made me cry. It was difficult to put down. But I did think I would have enjoyed it more when I was 17. It is very much a young-love book, but I've wanted to read Looking for Alaska for a while (The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of my favourite books and I've heard they're similar) so I will definitely read John Green again.
I couldn't put Before I Go To Sleep down, but like a lot of thriller novels, I found the ending a little disappointing. I don't know. I absolutely loved the book and it has a lot of twists and turns, but the ending left me feeling a little disappointed.
So now, you guys. What books should I be reading next? I'm not going to have as much time to read after this weekend (my uni work has kinda taken a hit this week so I'm gonna have to get on that!) but I'd like to have something to read when I have an hour or so to kill.
Books I love are...
- anything by Bret Easton Ellis
- or Chuck Palahniuk
- The Picture of Dorian Gray
- The Godfather
- The Beach
- The Shining
- anything by Margaret Atwood
- Trumpet
- We Need To Talk About Kevin
- One Day
- The Perks of Being A Wallflower
- The Help
- The Catcher in the Rye
- Trainspotting
- The Great Gatsby
- One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
- A Clockwork Orange
- The Sorrows of an American

I know, I know, I have the taste in novels of a 15 year old emo boy (my music taste is just the same!). So, book recommendations are much appreciated!

I promised regular updates will be starting again soon. Just been a really sucky week!

Ask me anything! FAQ post!

Okay, still too sick to take photos today, but I'm really hoping to get some photos done tomorrow. Anyway, this is just a quick update to get a bit of feedback from you guys!
I've wanted to redesign my blog for ages but I'm gonna be super busy over the next few months so I'm going to try to do it bit-by-bit. The first thing I really want to update is my FAQ page.
I have a list of questions that I want to include in my FAQ page, but what do you want to know? This is a page for you guys and for new readers to find out (hopefully!) most of what they need to know!
Here are the questions I'm going to include...

Where are you from?
How old are you?
What do you do?
How tall are you?
What dress size are you?
How long have you been blogging?
What camera do you use? Do you take your own photos?
Where do you like to shop?
What colours have you dyed your hair?
Do you have any tips for new bloggers?
What do you do in your spare time?
What do you want to do when you finish university?
Who are your favourite bloggers?

So that's all the questions I can think of, but what do you want to know? Let me know in the comments and I'll get going answering them!
Thanks guys!

So sick, so sick of being tired and oh so tired of being sick

Hey guys,
Just an apology to let you know that I am still feeling super under-the-weather and am spending yet another day in my sweatpants desperately trying to get my work done while also trying to rest.
I'm hoping to be back on my feet (and back in real clothes!) tomorrow and plan on updating tomorrow and Friday.
To make it up to you, here's a really cute picture of a panda:

Back tomorrow (hopefully!)

Keeping it Simple

girl next door fashion outfit

I tried on about four different outfits this morning and was getting really frustrated that nothing looked right. The first outfit I had on just wasn't going to keep my warm enough and with a day of walking around town, I knew heels wouldn't be a good idea. So I decided just to keep it super-simple. I've worn this outfit a few times before and it's perfect when I just want to be comfortable. It may not be the most flattering outfit in the world and the shoulders make me look like I should be playing quarterback, but hey, it's comfy and I love it.

Today has been such a fun day. I've been super sick all weekend with a cold (no doubt brought on by my lack of sleep on Thursday night) and I've been feeling a bit grumpy about the lack of work I've gotten done, but I really needed a few days rest. Today, my best friend Ellen came down to visit and we had a lovely day of catching up and shopping and starbucks and mexican food. Nom nom nom. I told myself I was allowed a day off from my shopping ban and ended up not seeing anything at all! However, I had seen a skirt on ASOS that I've wanted for a while but they didn't have it in my size, but then today I was looking at it and there was suddenly, magically a size 8 in stock! It was fate! But I'm back on the wagon tomorrow, promise.

I am doing everything in my power to distract myself from the fact that it's Valentines Day tomorrow. I know, I hate being one of those single people who hates it, but I just feel sad that my valentines day was so wonderful last year- I love it when I'm in a relationship! But I have really fun plans! My housemate Briony has been sorting out a charity Take Me Out (if you don't know how it works, look it up here!) and I'm one of the girls on it! I have absolutely no intention of getting a date but it should be a lot of fun anyway!

I hope those of you who are loved up have a lovely day!

Shopping Ban: Week Three

Okay, there have been some tiny slip ups this week. But I technically haven't bought anything. Technically.
I've had a really rough week this week and unfortunately, while some people turn to alcohol and drugs, I turn to online shopping. I have been window-shopping all over the shop the last few days. Strike one.
I also went to get dressed on Tuesday and found both of my black pleated skirts are way, way too big for me now (I know, everyone hates the girl who moans that her clothes are now too big, but hey, it's annoying) and I am thus without a black pleated skirt. So, I spent my $30 Oasap voucher on this skirt, but I did have to pay the $12 difference. Strike two.
Finally, I'd been eyeing up this skirt for absolutely ages, and thinking, oh god, I have 3 weeks of shopping ban left. Sian (who fell off the shopping ban wagon this week too!) said if I could wait until March without buying it, she'd buy it for me. But it was in the sale and I just knew in 3 weeks time it would be sold out. So I ummed and ahhed over it and eventually, my Mum said she would treat me to it so I wouldn't have to break my ban. I'm also going to wear it to my Nan's 80th party this weekend. While I technically didn't pay for it, I kinda shopped. Strike three.
And finally, pre-emptive strikes four and five. Last night, in the pouring down rain waiting for my Dad at the train station, I realised that my feet were wet. Very wet. It turns out that my beloved lace-up miliatary boots are about the go to the big boot place in the sky. So on Monday, I will be replacing them. Which leads to Monday.
My bestbestbest friend Ellen is coming to visit me on Monday and we'd planned a day of shopping, pre-ban. Now, I was initially just going to wander around and not buy anything, but instead I have vowed to not go crazy in any way, and to only buy things on my list. Which is new flat black military boots, another pair of white ankle socks (I've lost one of mine! How annoying!) and some black, high-heeled ankle boots, which I also plan to wear for my Nan's birthday. None of these items are one-off impulse buys but things I have been thinking of for a while or things I need to replace. I don't intend to spend any more than £50 in total on these three items. I know it's technically cheating, but it is just one day where I am allowed to shop, before I get back on the wagon until March.
I know this sounds like a cop-out but believe me, I had no idea how hard this was until I started to do it! I think next time I have a ban though, I will do it during 30 for 30 as Kendi always has a ban for this time. During 30 for 30 I find I am focused enough on what I have that I can ignore potential new treats. But at the moment, with my birthday coming up, #ldnlunch coming up and new season items coming into shops, it's very hard to stay strong.
Wish me luck for the next 3 weeks. I promise after Monday I won't fail you again!
How are you guys getting on with your bans?

Mustard, Tartan and Fur

girl next door fashion outfit

I wasn't really sure if I liked this outfit today, and now I've seen the photos I'm even more confused. It's kind of a mish-mash of ideas. I'd seen a girl wearing a tartan shirt and mustard scarf a few days ago and thought, ah that would be fun, but I didn't want to wear my blue jeans because that would be too much like this outfit, so I went for my mustard ones (which always make me feel like Shaggy from Scooby Doo) and the gilet-over-leather-jacket thing was something I've been wanting to try for a while. No doubt stolen from Andrea. Overall, I kinda like it but it's not my favourite outfit in the world.

So what's new? Um... well I finally sorted out my graduation deferral which is good and I have my appointment booked to go to the embassy to get my Visa now! Unfortunately my appointment is at 9am in London and it's over Easter break so I'm getting the *gulp* 5.515am train! Eeek! Anyway, I'm excited to get stuff for the summer up and running. I had a lovely skype chat with my best friend Michelle (who is on her semester abroad in Paris, ooh la la!) last night and we were talking about our trip to San Francisco last year and I was getting so excited about my summer (I'm still not placed yet, but I'd love to be in SF!) and about me coming back to visit Minnesota and I can't wait.

School is really kicking my ass right now and really getting me down. It's like a horrible paradox of wanting the time to be over but at the same time realising how much work I have to do before the end and stressing myself out over it. I also got one of my essays back today and I really thought it was a First-class essay and I got 66 (70 is a First). I know that is a great mark and I should be happy but I just really thought I had pushed a little harder. I'm waiting to get feedback on another essay tomorrow and I've been feeling less confident about that one so now I feel even less confident. It's just right now I feel that my life is spent working in the library and I don't know how to give any more without burning out. I swear dancing is the only think keeping me sane. I enjoy it so much, especially after a long day.

girl next door fashion outfit girl next door fashion outfit

Anyway, I'd better get to bed! I have a crazy day tomorrow- early morning library sesh, a meeting, class for 2 hours and then I'm on the next train back home to go see my absolute favourite band Brand New (for the fifth time!) and then I'm on the 6.30am train back to Birmingham for a presentation in my 9am class! Crazy!

Oh and PS. I'm guest posting over at Siel's blog today. Not a fashion post but my absolute favourite dinner recipe- veggie tagine.

Have an awesome day guys!
