This Week I...

Sorry this is a little late. I went out to see Premium Rush with Genna on Sunday and when I got home my housemates were all hanging out and I wanted to join in the fun! Here's what I've been up to this week...

- went out with Genna on Monday for delicious Mexican food and cocktails
- very much enjoyed doing my hair and makeup for the occasion
- met some fellow Brits sitting at the next table. It was 4 guys who had just finished working at a summer camp and were travelling. It was so exciting to hear another British accent.
- had more cocktails and played pool with some guys in Hemmingways Cafe
- discovered that homemade breakfast burritos are the way forward
- had a lovely day shopping in the mall with my housemate, Kristyna
- may have bought another VS bra
- and a shirt from H&M
- ended up getting stuck in the mall again, but decided waiting an hour for the bus was much better than being stuck in the middle of nowhere in Connecticut for 6 hours
- ate my first Auntie Ann's soft pretzel (sour cream and onion, SO GOOD!)
- had a yummy frappucino (why is there no starbucks in Seaside Heights I ask you?!)
- discovered that the Macy's in our mall has a MAC counter. How did I not know this? Actually it's probably a good thing I didn't know!
- finally got my eyebrows waxed- and I love them!
- went to see The Dark Knight Rises again with one of the guys from work
- went out after work on Wednesday with people from work for pizza, dippin dots and rides at the pier
- rode the Skyscraper again!
- discovered that serious tiredness is when you say no to free ice cream in favour of sleeping
- got really excited that I'm going to see Bri again next week
- planned the trip to Philly/DC that our boss is taking us on
- booked a trip to Niagara Falls and got an amazing deal. $225 between three of us ($75 each), including transport, a hotel and a tour of the falls! I cannot wait!
- tie-dyed my work tshirt and despite getting stressed out about getting it right, actually did a pretty good job!
- found out from my Dad that I got a letter with all my results and marks on from Birmingham. And it made my Dad cry.
- had a lot of fun celebrating our housemate's birthday on Thursday
- found out that it's tradition to take a shot of Ukrainian Vodka and instead of a chaser, follow it with a pickle! Very weird!
- Also discovered that adding alcohol to a slurpee is GENIUS
- kept close to the birthday cake when I saw it was being cut. Mmmmm.
- decided that sometimes you have to take a leap of faith and see what happens, even if it's not really the right place or the right time. It's better to do something for a while than regret not doing it at all.
- discovered that sitting out watching the ocean and drinking coffee at 8am is wonderful
- enjoyed watching the plastic crab race we had in our lazy river on Saturday
- ordered these jeans from Own The Runway. I just hope they arrive before I leave! They are exactly the same as the AX paris ones I was lusting over, and they're in the sale!
- was very proud to be featured on Sally's links list. Hi new readers!
- got very excited that I only have to work 9.30-6 for the rest of the season and not 8.30-7!
- finally sent all my postcards (including cards to all the people who helped me in Boston)
- bought a pair of second hand Nike sneakers for walking on my road trip. They are like walking in air. I love them. Is this what comfortable shoes feel like?!
- went on a really fun mini golf date
- did not eat chocolate covered bacon- but I heard it was good!
- tried my first cannoli
- went to see Premium Rush (and saw a trailer for the next JGL movie while I was there- heaven!)
- of course, got froyo afterwards
- had a busier day off than my days at work- but I was very productive!
- absolutely loved only working until 6!
- decided to go do karaoke tonight but I'n starting to get cold feet. A glass of wine or two and I will definitely get myself up there!
- had an article posted on the Grazia Magazine website about my experiences in New Jersey! You can check it out here!

Bebop

Hands up if you read the title of this post and got "Um Bop" by Hanson stuck in your head? No? Is that just me? Well Bebop are the lovely people who sent me these gorgeous leopard jeans! I've wanted a pair of leopard jeans for ages and even tried a pair on in H&M a few weeks ago, so when I was asked to chose something from their look book, I had to ask for these jeans! This is actually what I wore on Friday night for a party at our house but luckily it's a little cooler today so I didn't fry taking photos in jeans!. This shirt is the one I bought from H&M on Tuesday-it's not my usual silhouette and I toyed with the idea of tucking it in, but I liked the relaxed fit a little better. I'm excited to tuck it into skirts and wear under jumpers in the cooler weather.

About 30 minutes after I took these pictures it started to thunderstorm. Good timing on my part, but the wind was all kinds of crazy while I took these, hence the lack of close-up shots. Every photo I tried to take of my face resulted in a hair moustache. Speaking of which, my hair and I are not on good terms right now. Let's start with the fact that it will not hold a curl no matter what I do. I curled my hair extra tight right before I took these because I have a date tonight and wanted my hair to be curly for it, but even by the time I took these photos it was starting to fall! Now it's practically straight! And also, what colour is my hair right now? Seriously! It's basically red and blonde at the moment! Just a month and a half away from a hair appointment haha.

I've had a really, really fun week and had my This Week I post all planned out to go up last night, but when I got home from the cinema (I went to see Premium Rush. I love JGL more than life) my housemates had people over as a lot of them left today, so I decided to enjoy spending time with them, eating pretzels and hanging out. I'm hoping to get my This Week I post up tomorrow at least! This is my last full week at work, isn't that crazy? Where has time gone? I'm determined to enjoy every last minute I have left here, but I'm getting really excited to go travelling!
I hope you had a lovely week!

Red or Dead

One of my favourite outfits ever posted on this blog? Yep, I think so. There is something about this dress that makes me feel amazing. Like a Princess. And of course, I adore my new leather jacket. I knew I would have regretted it if I hadn't bought it! When I was a teenager (well, from the ages of 16-20), my hair was blonde and pink. Evidence? Of course! Any excuse for old embarrassing emo pictures. Anyway, I never, ever used to wear red because of course, it clashed with my hair. After dying the pink bits of my hair black, I went a little crazy buying red. Now I'm brunette, people always tell me red is my colour. And I am definitely okay with that! I had so many compliments on this outfit yesterday and on Monday. I felt a million dollars.

I actually wore this outfit two days in a row. I know, outfit repeater! I initially wore this to go out on Monday night, but I couldn't get any good iPhone pictures and I knew this outfit had to be documented. I've had so much fun the last few days! On Monday I went out with Genna for mexican food and cocktails at a restaurant down on the boardwalk. Then, right as we were about to leave for, ahem, more cocktails, I realised the guys on the next table were English! I had a chat with them for a while and it was just so exciting to speak to someone else from my country, someone who could appreciate all the stupid questions people ask me, someone who could say "awesome" and "water" and all those other words people laugh at and sound just like me. It was so nice. Then we headed to Hemmingways for cocktails where we were invited to play a game of pool with some other guys, and finally ran into some of our fellow lifeguards on the walk home. Tuesday I spent the afternoon at the mall with my housemate Kristyna which was a lot of fun! We went in nearly every shop, browsed for hours and ate Auntie Ann's Sour Cream and Onion pretzels. I had such a lovely day, even when we missed the bus home and had to wait and hour for the next one! I bought another VS bra (whoops!) and although I wasn't supposed to be buying anything, a gorgeous black top from H&M with a pearl collar. Then last night after work, a group of us headed down to the boardwalk for pizza and ice cream and to go on the rides at the pier. We went on a handful of rides and managed to get on Skyscraper again, which was awesome but terrifying! I'm having ups and downs at the moment which homesickness and feeling a little bit lost in my life. I'm starting to feel ready in a lot of ways to move on from this place. I'm getting sick of living with 10 other people and sharing a bathroom with 7,  and I'm getting tired with my job, but I'm just trying to enjoy the moments I have when I'm having a good time, because those are the memories I will cherish.

I think the next few days will be a little more quiet because honestly, that's what I need right now. I have three articles I need to write, plus some stuff for this blog to sort out. Blogging and writing is like a whole other job, on top of being a grown up- grocery shopping, cooking, laundry. I am always so busy! But, it's almost over which makes me sad and happy at the same time. Next week is my last full week of work! I have less than 3 weeks left in New Jersey before I start my road trip!

Dinosaurs, Pandas and Michael Jackson- Oh My!

girl next door fashion outfit

Okay it's probably (read: definitely) not cool enough yet in New Jersey for me to be wearing a leather jacket, but this jacket is the exception I think. LOOK HOW PRETTY. Okay it's totally pushing Michael-Jackson-in-the-Thriller-video, but I think it's fabulous. I spied it in Forever 21 on Tuesday. Picked it up, tried it on, fell in love, but decided to be sensible and put it back. I'd just paid for my $800 flights to MN so I knew I didn't need it. But when I left the shop, I knew it was one of those things I would massively regret if I left behind, and because, let's face it, it's F21, it's unlikely I would ever see it again. So I, as I later told Bri, YOLO'd, this phrase used with the upmost irony and jest. And Bri and I decided I would tell everyone she practically forced me to buy it. Just as she tells people I forced her to buy the gorgeous trench she bought a few weeks ago. We have decided as we both bought jackets together that these are out official friendship jackets. Our Brilotte jackets. When we wear them, we must think of our friendship. That is my justification!

I apologise, yet again, for my tan lines. These shorts are actually a little longer but they just looked awkward with this outfit at that length so I had to roll them up. I am rarely a roller. I never rolled my school skirt or my shorts at the waterpark, but these required a roll. Also my tshirt has a panda on and my necklace has a dinosaur on. I don't think it gets any better than that. I've actually had this tshirt for months. If you've been reading my blog for a while you'll know that pandas are my favourite animal. I have quite the selection of panda things (slippers, rings, necklaces, pajamas, pillows, gloves, jumpers, hats...) and when I went to Edinburgh for my birthday to see the pandas (yes, I am 22), I wanted something else from the gift shop. I saw a picture of this tshirt on a display but they didn't have any available, so before I even got to the car I'd ordered it online. I love it so much. And then the dinosaur necklace? Well I just really love dinosaurs. Who doesn't? When I saw the dinosaur necklaces that Eclectic Eccentricity had on their website, I had a kind of mental breakdown trying to decide which dinosaur I wanted. I really, really fancied the stegosaurus, but in the end went for the triceratops. He's awesome.

I had a great time seeing The Dark Knight Rises again last night, and tonight I'm going for dinner and to a local bar which is supposed to be nice. I've decided to keep my days off as relaxing as possible as I'm trying to do lots of things after work this week as a lot of my friends are leaving for college soon! I'm going out next week to do karaoke and I can't wait!
Have a lovely day guys!

This Week I...

- rode 11 rides at Six Flags
- rode the tallest rollercoaster in the world, and the second fasetst
- created my highest sock bun yet (perfect for rollercoaster-riding!)
- shot paintballs for the first time
- finally got my coldstone!
- tried a soft pretzel for the first time (my response? "It's like a hard pretzel...but soft!)
- had our last ever Monday Night sushi and nacho night, with lots of leftovers!
- had my first real rescue! (finally!)
- had a really great night on Thursday night when we had friends over
- wore makeup and curled my hair and felt human!
- said goodbye to Bri
- but planned a trip to come visit her before I leave the East coast
- had our last Brilotte date to Target and the Mall
- bought this amazing red leather jacket
- booked my flights back to Duluth!
- started researching the prospect of doing a Masters (hopefully part time) next year (2013-14) in the ACS department at Birmingham to continue my dissertation research
- created banana pinapple smoothies!
- went to sleep at 8.30pm on Friday night (wild!)
- rediscovered my love of post-work walks along the boardwalk
- thoroughly enjoyed watching the Closing Ceremony
- cried all the way through the closing ceremony because I was so proud of my country

- started to write a huge "books to read" list for when I get home
- had an unexpected Brilotte lunch date when Bri came into work
- made a pot of chilli. It was 10 portions
- finally finished Life of Pi (I can't remember the last time it took me 2 months to read a book. When you have an English degree you're used to reading 2 books a week. Shows how busy I've been!)
- started reading In Cold Blood
- staring writing postcards to send home (I can't believe I leave in 3 weeks!)

I think I'm off to see The Dark Knight Rises again tonight, and then plan to spend my days off writing articles, blogging, shopping with my housemate and generally relaxing and getting things done. I am so excited to get some rest!

Oh Em Gee

I would like to make it known that I really, really hate the shoes I'm wearing with this outfit. But of course, I have an excuse. These photos were taken a couple of days before I left home, and I had plans to go for coffee with my friend Eve. The leopard flats I wanted to wear (these ones), absolutely destroy my feet and I knew I would be walking to the coffee shop to meet her. Rather than show you an outfit I did not actually wear, aka, the nice shoes, I went with honesty and am showing you what I actually wore. But yeah, I hate these shoes with this outfit. So I apologise.

Regardless of shoe choice, I really love this outfit. I love me a good pencil skirt. At the moment I have to really think about what I'm buying, because when I come home in October I'm going to be looking for a grown up job, which means my wardrobe is going to change a lot. I need to think of pieces that will work well for the office as well as for the weekend. This skirt was perfect. It's a stretchy material, so it fits perfectly, and I'm actually considering getting it in black too. It's so funny that during the last year my style has become much more preppy and grown up- button up shirts, pencil skirts, trousers, blazers- but it means I'll have a larger scope of clothes to choose from when I do get a job (fingers crossed!). I could definitely have dressed this up more formally with a white shirt and blazer, but that would be easy, so I thought I'd show you how a pencil skirt can be worn for the day time. This tartan shirt is one of my favourite, favourite things and it instantly makes the skirt look more casual. I thought leopard accessories would be a fun and unexpected touch too!

Now Bri has gone back to school my social life has all but disintegrated, but I'm having a good time relaxing right now. We had a few people over last night which was really fun (even though I had to go to bed early because I had to be up for work at 7!), and I've started to get back into going for 4-5 mile walks after work. I'm going to enjoy having some time to relax, read and cook over the next few days before bringing my social life back in. I'm starting to get really sad that I'm leaving in a few weeks, but I'm excited for a whole month of travelling when I finish working! I am going to miss the people here so, so much though. I'm having such a great summer!
I hope your week has been lovely!

Mint and Pink

girl next door fashion outfit
girl next door fashion outfit
A few days ago I brought you mint and red, and today I bring you mint and pink! I do occasionally change out this top. Occasionally. I just love it very, very much. I also assure you that these shorts are not as tight and unflattering as they look. However I did have to take 75 photos to get 6 that I liked. I definitely chose the wrong underwear this morning. Anyway, despite that, I really like this outfit. I had plans for a mint and pink outfit before I left but I didn't get around to it, so I thought I'd give this a go. I was going to wear sandals but I tried my converse and really liked the look. I also used my new MAC shadows to do my makeup, but I absolutely suck at photographing my makeup. It's Kieko Lynn's Pretty in Pink tutorial using Pink Venus, Sushi Flower and Rice paper. Oh and you can see all the crazy colours in my hair in these pictures!

I've had a super busy, but really fun last few days. Sunday night I stayed at my friend Angelica's house and we ate pizza and Coldstone (my favourite ice cream!) and played Disney Scene It. Then yesterday we went to Six Flags Great Adventure! It was so, so much fun. I was super excited because I love rollercoasters and there are so many great ones there. We managed to get on 11 rides, and Kingda Ka was definitely my favourite. It's the second fastest rollercoaster in the world, and the tallest (thanks Wiki!). It shoots you at 125 miles an hour up a huge tower, and then you come down almost vertically on the other side. It was so fast my sock bun fell out! I had an absolutely awesome day. Then afterwards I came back for Monday night sushi and nachos with Bri, some of my housemates and a couple of friends from work. I have lots of sushi left for lunch too! Then I stayed at Bri's house because she leaves to go back to college tomorrow! I'm going to miss her so much! Today I am absolutely exhausted so I'm spending the day calling my parents, catching up on articles, writing postcards and watching the closing ceremony. I didn't manage to watch it on Sunday and I finally found a place to download it. I've cried all the way through so far! I am so, so sad that I haven't been home for the Olympics and we don't have a TV in my house, but I am so, so incredibly proud to be British. I'm having a great time here, but I'm really excited to come home.

I'm off to eat my sushi, and there's a good chance I'm going to take a nap (I do not last well on 12 hours sleep in two days!)
Have a lovely day, guys!
