Second Chances

I really wanted to give this dress another go as I wasn't 100% sure about my outfit on Saturday. I actually have another couple of remixing ideas which I'd like to try before sending it on to the other girls in The Lovely Ones. Today's outfit is much more me, don't you think?

As you can probably tell by the lack of photography skills, these were not taken by my lovely boyfriend, but just me alone with my tripod as usual. Sob. BUT the boyfriend has updated his Flickr now so you should go head over if you're interested in his photography. I'm hoping to drag him out again this week at some point. Seeing these photos made me realize how damn good at photography he is!! However, I was a naughty girl yesterday and caved and bought a portrait lens. I am done for camera stuff now. I am dedicating all my time to my camera book and not buying anything new for a really long time now!! I realised when I went onto Flickr that my only pictures are items for The Lovely Ones, so I'm going to get on that. I do occasionally post photos on Tumblr if you follow me there though.

Today was another epic fail day much like Friday. I went downtown to do another interview for my journalism story due tomorrow, and was really happy to have gotten everything done within 20 minutes. I headed to the bus stop and thought "fab, I see a bus!!", not even thinking, I jumped on. It took me about 5 minutes to realise I was on the wrong bus. I ended up riding it for 45 minutes before getting off at the same bus stop where I started. Le sigh. I then went to the supermarket to kill some time and fell over and cut my hand. Fail fail fail. Fortunately I am now in the library with my story first-drafted so I'm feeling a little better about my day. I think the bag of Sour Patch Kids (my favourites :]]]) helped too!!

I die trying just to keep myself from kissing you.

After weeks and weeks of moaning, I finally convinced my boyfriend to take my outfit pictures!! We were about to go to sleep last night when I said, "hey, how about tomorrow I go back to my apartment, get ready and we drive somewhere for you to take my outfit photos?" He bought a portrait lens a few weeks ago and I've been desperate for him to practice using it by taking my outfit pictures!! I think they turned out pretty well, considering how cold I was when I finally took off my coat!!

Speaking of lenses, I almost bought one today. We went to the camera store but they were out of the Canon 50mm F1.8 that I wanted. I've been looking on ebay and have found a few for a decent price, but I think I might go Amazon on this one. I know I should wait until I get my birthday money in a couple of weeks but I'm SO impatient!!

Today has been such a perfect day. Erick has been working every night this week so I hadn't really seen him since Monday, so be picked me up last night and we talked all night like when we first got together and had a lazy morning this morning before going to take these and then doing a quick grocery shop. Tonight we went to go see a friend's band play, which was really fun. I love to actually do stuff when we spend time together- although there are times we just end up exhaustedly watching Parks and Recreation or Dexter after a long day.

I am really lucky that this dress was actually sent to us courtesy of Modcloth for The Lovely Ones. I'm really proud that we had someone actually send us something to style!! The debate over what to choose was pretty heated but we decided this would fit everyone and its simplicity would make it really interesting to remix. It was actually really hard to style because it was such a blank canvas. This was actually my second attempt at styling it today, and I think I'll give it another go or two before passing it on. You can see how Ashley of Two Eyes in the Mirror styled it here. Also, if you're interesting in joining The Lovely Ones, please feel free to drop me an email at :]]

I'm not sure how well you can tell, but the background of these pictures is actually a frozen-over Lake Superior. Erick went down to take some close-up pictures of the Lake and he couldn't tell where the beach ended and the lake began. It was absolutely beautiful though. I felt as though we were the last two people on Earth. It was just endless white. I can honestly see how people who have lived in Duluth say they can't imagine not living near water. Whenever I go to the library, I always sit on the fourth floor so I can look out of the window onto the lake. I'd love to have a house that overlooks it. What a beautiful view to have every morning.

Sorry for such an epically photo-heavy post, I just really loved these pictures. I hope we get a chance to shoot pictures together again soon- it's so nice to first of all have someone else take them for me, and second of all, have the opportunity to go somewhere different than just the trees outside my apartment. I told Erick I probably look extra happy on these pictures because he was taking them :]]

Hope you're all having a lovely weekend and have a lovely Sunday :]]

I wanna live like we live in the summer

I'm either not sleeping enough, my stress reflex is tired or my boyfriend has mellowed me out. Today was a bit of an epic fail day and I can't help finding it funny. Today I had an interview to do in Downtown Duluth for a story I have due for my journalism class next week. I took the bus down after class and the interview went really well. After I'd finished I asked the interviewee if she knew anyone else who would be helpful to speak to for my research and she told me to take a trip to Whole Foods Co-op. It's only 4 blocks, I thought, I can do that without waiting for a bus.
However, I was wearing this outfit, with my 3/4 sleeved fur coat. One pair of tights, a jumper and one short sleeved coat is not much of a barrier against -18 degree weather. After 4 blocks, uphill, I was ready to die. Turns out that the person who I wanted to speak to at the store was in but I needed to make an appointment (?). A little frustrated, I went to catch the bus.
After 20 minutes in cold so awful I was almost in tears, I admitted defeat and called my half-asleep boyfriend to come get me. Thankfully, he did. I then got home to find I'd forgotten my keys! Luckily, my housemates had only just left and came back to let me in! I remained strangely calm during all of this, which is retrospect, really is quite funny. Today I am thankful for mobile phones and people!!

I actually bought this blouse from a charity shop over the summer, and while I've worn it a couple of times I've never really found an outfit I liked enough to photograph. I was browsing Look Book a few days ago when I was given the idea of layering a jumper over a blouse and I really like the result!!

How adorable is Cee? I hope you liked her guest post yesterday and you go read her blog. She is so gorgeous and stylish- I was so happy to have the opportunity to guest post with her.

Not much else to report really!! I'm spending my afternoon working on my article and then going for some yummy dinner with my friend Laura later on, and then spending some time with my boy for the first time in days when he finishes work- if I can avoid falling asleep before he finishes at 10!
I have three items from The Lovely Ones here so I really need to get my remixes on!!
Have a fabulous Friday!

Guest Post- Cee of Coco and Vera!

Bonjour, lovelies! I'm Cee from Coco and Vera. This month Charlotte and I have been paired up by The Guestpost Group. I was in Paris when I got the email letting me know my partner for the month of February, and I was thrilled- I adore Charlotte and really admire her ability to mix edgy and girly pieces to create a look that is entirely her own- but also a bit daunted. The Girl Next Door shares so much of herself with her readers, wheras my posts tended to be limited to a short paragraph; two at most.

Why? I'm not sure. Maybe because I don't think my life is as glamourous as my outfits and I don't want to distract from what my blog is really about: fashion. But these photos were taken on a relatively exciting day of my life, so I'll share a little bit of it with you.

These photos were taken in the park on the hill that leads up to Sacre-Coeur Basilica in Paris. My husband and I spent three weeks staying in an apartment on nearby rue de Clignancourt. We briefly lived in Paris a few years ago, and I had been waiting two years to go back. I love everything about Paris- the pristine architecture; the charming cafes and, of course, all of the shopping. But what I love about this park is that it is completely unlike Paris. The hill was once used as a Roman quarry, and the pathes have been carved out of the rock. Wild tomcats live in the trees and bushes, surviving on local snails (and, I suspect, half-eaten ice cream bars left behind by tourists.)

After taking these photos, we spent our day in Le Marais, one of my favourite neighbourhoods in Paris; wandering the narrow streets munching on delicious cream-filled pastries.

My husband and I came home to Vancouver a few days later. In Canada, my everyday life is much more normal. I work in finance, spend time with my friends and update my blog (almost) daily :)

Peter Pan

These photos were a complete nightmare. I planned on taking them inside, but I ended up getting behind time and I don't like taking pictures when people are home so I decided to head outside. As I set up, I realized I'd left my remote in my apartment. After a few attempts with just the self timer, I came out with several blurry pictures and after a few almost-falls on the ice, I retrieve my remote and tried to avoid death.

I had a fairly unsuccessful trip to Forever 21 over the weekend. Despite bringing about 15 items to the changing room in total, this shirt was the only thing I came back with. I was determined to buy something with a Peter Pan collar this weekend- I am completely obsessed!! I was worried I'd have nothing to wear it with, but this morning I came up with quite a few combinations I'm excited to try. I really liked the look of it with this skirt, although this skirt is ridiculously short. I think it was made to be worn on the hips but it looks much better on the waist, but I need a belt to keep it up!!

I was reading Maggey's blog yesterday and what she said really struck a chord with me. She took a break from blogging last week and had a couple of other bloggers fill in for her, and she talked about her resolution to not blog when she didn't want to to avoid burning out.
Before Christmas, I was obsessed with my blog stats. I would work out when to post for maximum views, find time to squeeze in outfit shots during finals week and agonize over how the present day's views compared to yesterday's. When I went to London for the weekend, I worried about how my stats would go down without me posting. I even posted on Christmas Day.
Since getting back to the States, I have started to be more relaxed. I love my blog and I have a lot of fun, but it's not my whole life. I am not going to put blogging before my real life and the important people in it. If you've been reading lately, you'll know that I'm in a really great place in my life right now and I think this is definitely related to how I feel about my blog.
Don't get me wrong, I still try to update every day and give you something interesting to read and I will continue with that. But, like Maggey, I can appreciate that if there comes a time I feel that it's a chore for me, I'll take a break for a little while. But for the record, so far, so good :]]

I had a bit of a cardigan crisis too today, which almost lead to me taking pictures inside. This blouse has such lovely sleeve details that I struggled to find something that didn't cut them off. I couldn't even imagine in my head the perfect cardigan for this outfit. I tried about 5 before I settled on the simple black cardigan, which I think worked pretty well. This is one thing I do hate about living in a cold climate, both here and at home, you have to be so creative with your layering!! I did manage to take a few non-cardigan shots in a moment of bravery so you can see how the sleeves poof out.

Wish I had more interesting things to report but today is a day of being productive so my week is a little easier!! Tomorrow I am going Downtown to visit a few vintage shops and boutiques for research for my journalism article, which I'm hoping will be fun, and then local band Trampled By Turtles (who are kinda  big deal in Duluth!!) are playing a free concert on campus which I'm really excited about.

Have a great day!!
