Week in Photos

Wanna know something cool? This is my 500th blog post! I know, crazy right!! I'm going to London this evening and won't be back til Friday night, but I have a few outfits to post up and I'm sure I'll have lots to tell you about my work experience this week. Would you guys be interested in like a "Diary of a Fashion Magazine Intern" kinda thing this week?

1. Broken nail :[[
My thumb nail completely snapped off out of the blue on Monday! I was devastated!!
2. Nails for the week
I love having one sparkly nail
3. We Need to Talk About Kevin
Steph and I went to the cinema on Tuesday to see We Need to Talk About Kevin. I adored the book but I read it long ago enough not to notice any anomalies. It was pretty harrowing watching but I thought it was a great adaptation.

4. Cake!
This was Ed's birthday cake and Steph gave me a slice on Tuesday. It constituted my breakfast for Wednesday and Thursday
5. Leather shorts and suspender tights
This was what I wore on Wednesday, but I decided against the suspender tights. I have the outfit to put up next week.
6. Minnesota necklace
Erick bought me this before I left America and even though we've broken up, I still adore it. I think I'm ready to start wearing it again, especially as I want to move back there.

7. Go Bulldogs!
This was what I wore to my dance classes on Thursday.
8&9. Getting ready for drinks
Modcloth dress, Zara blazer and a scarf to protect my modesty!!

10. Sneaky white wine spritzer
I went for drinks with people from work and had a really great night. I love going out for drinks and catching up with people.
11. Shots!
And the unexpected shots that Benjy bought! I had the red one.

12-14. How to wear a red midi skirt
I tried out every option from this thread, before finally settling on the last outfit.

15. Library time
I'm that person who gets every single  book out on a topic when I'm researching something. I bet the other students hate me.
16. Study break
A grande skimmed milk Caramel Macciato and Grazia. Love.
17. Favourite library spot
I love looking out of the window.

18. Last minute Halloween costume
I dressed up 60s with a beehive, red lips and a spotty dress. I kinda looked like an exaggerated version of myself
19. Playboy bunny
Briony went as a playboy bunny- I loved her tail!!
20. Night out snapshot

21-23. Sick day
Before you accuse me of being hungover, I had half a glass of wine on Friday night, but spent the night feeling awful and yesterday in bed. I wore my cosy panda jumper for a quick run to the shops, ate my sick food of tomato soup and painted my nails.

24-28. Work experience outfits
I had to get packed this morning so I tried on all my outfits for the week to check everything looked okay. They told me there was no dress code but it was all about comfort, so I bought lots of dresses, flats and my black wedges
29. First class to London!
I completely forgot that I got a First Class upgrade for £3. Exciting!!

Have a great week guys, I'll update when I can!!

Fight off your demons

If I look incredibly uncomfortable in these photos, it's because there was a weird guy in my alley (MY ALLEY!!) when I took them and he was kinda lurking around me, pretending to be on the phone. He eventually creeped me out so much (I mean who hangs out in alleys for kicks... except me) that I packed up and came inside. I was kinda annoyed but also glad I didn't meet my maker in the alley.

brand new tshirt- Brand New website (about 5 years ago)
red midi skirt- Internacionale
leather jacket- H&M
wedges- New Look
hat- Marks and Spencers

If you follow me on Instagram (girlnextdoorfashion) you might have seen this outfit as a work in progress this morning. I was reading this thread on Polyvore for advice on what to wear with a red pleated midi skirt (perfect!) and was trying on each of the different options. I didn't think this outfit work work but I really like it. It's funny, someone commented a few days ago that I wear a lot of red on my blog. Well, I guess a lot of you weren't around then, but up until January of this year (and for 4 and a half years before then), I had pink in my hair and would never, ever wear red because it clashed with my hair. Now I'm so glad I don't have that problem anymore because I LOVE red.

I've had this tshirt since I was about 16. I am a huge Brand New fan and this is one of their shirts. It's always perfect when you need a grungy tshirt, plus I like supporting my favourite band. Talking of old favourites, for about 5 minutes this morning I thought I'd lost my leather jacket. I'm not sure where I thought I'd lost it, but I thought it was lost, nonetheless. I would absolutely die if anything happened to this jacket. It is the perfect leather jacket. Oh and as you can see, this is my new skirt. Love.

Well, my costume plans didn't quite go right (Briony's Katy Perry costume didn't come in time and I didn't want to be Russell Brand alone) so I pulled together a last-minute 60s-inspired costume thanks to lots of backcombinb, hairspray, red lipstick and a polka dot dress. Tbh, I just look like a more exaggerated version of myself! I'm hopefully gonna get a few photos to show you!!

Have a great night!!

I love MN

These photos are actually from Tuesday, and I had written a full post to accompany them, but instead of posting about my day two days ago, I decided these photos were much more relevant to what I had to talk to you about today. Yesterday, I went to talk to the second year ACS (American and Canadian Studies) students about their year abroad next year, and I talked to them about my experience at UMD. Talking to them almost made me cry, and I thought "oh what I would be you guys sat here, knowing you're going to be in the States in less than a year". And it was then that I realised there was nothing stopping me from moving back by this time next year.

So I've decided I want to move to Minneapolis.

I know I talked about moving to Chicago or New York, I talked about moving to London and I talked about staying at home and doing a journalism course, but nowhere feels like home like Minnesota does. As much as I love Chicago, I can't imagine being anywhere but Minnesota. It's my home. And there was always the risk of how lonely I would be in Chicago. Moving over to work isn't the same as moving over to go to school where you meet lots of people and get involved in all kinds of social events. In Minneapolis, I would never be lonely. I know lots of people there, and people I know have already given me ideas on who to contact and which jobs I could look at. Right now, it's a pipedream. But I'm going to see my personal tutor this afternoon to see what I need to do to make it a reality. I'm scared and excited and I don't know even if I might chance my mind in a few weeks. But right now, this feels right.

jacket- primark
scarf- asos
maroon pants- asos (river island)
brogues- new look
I heart MN tshirt- Minnesota shop

The weather here has been gross the last few days, so I've gotten into take indoor photos more. On Monday, I planned to photograph my outfit but by the time I got around to it, it was pitch dark outside. We had our landing light fixed on Tuesday though, so I think this will be where my indoor photos will be over the colder months. I admit, it's not the best place in the world for photos and I way prefer outdoor photos, but it's not always an option.

You might recognise this outfit from my week in photos. It was just a cold looking day on Tuesday and my first thought was "pants". I am also crazy in love with this jacket. It's gorgeous and goes with everything. I still can't believe it's from Primark!

I have an insane amount of back-log on photos this week from our internet being down, so I should hopefully have enough pictures to update while I'm on work experience, which will be nice.

Have a great day- I hope it's less grey and rainy where you are!!

Hey guys,
Just a quick apology for the lack of posting. I have a full post ready to go but our Internet is painfully slow again and i'm too tired to spend 15 waiting for one photo to upload.
Our fourth angry phone call to Virgin Media commences tomorrow so sit tight and i'll try to be more patient tomorrow.

In Fate's Hands

This week has gone far too fast. I can't believe it's Friday already. I've had a pretty up and down week, really, and it's set to be even more up and down next week. Everything is kinda confusing, up in the air. Life is being left in the hands of fate, or rather, other people. Do you ever think that fate is just other people? Something significant is happening this week, which I may or may not share with you, and whichever way this goes, my life will change in some way. I'm scared, because I don't know if I can see a positive outcome. And I'm scared because whichever way I look, there doesn't seem to be a right answer. I've spent the last few days wondering whether in life, we should think, well, what will be will be in certain situations. I've always been an advocate of making my own luck, but sometimes I guess you can't control everything. Sometimes you have to just let things happen. But there is always the worry of regretting something you didn't do.

Okay, philosophical moment over. Let's look at the positive stuff. Well I ended up having a great time on Wednesday night when I went for drinks with people on my course- people who had also been away in America or Canada. It was so nice to catch up with people and hear about their experiences abroad, and chat about what we miss and things we loved and hated. I also decided, by the end of the night, that my friend Annie and I are moving to Chicago next year. Annie, I'm not joking. I am a couple of clicks away from looking for jobs and Visas. I'm kinda going through a bit of an existentialist crisis right now. I don't know what I want to do anymore. Do I want to do a journalism qualification? Apply for more work experience? Work in fashion? Move to London, or move back home? But more than anything else, I just want to get my ass back in America. And I also just want to up sticks and leave and start from nothing.

So this was what I wore today. And what have I done so far today? Well I went shopping with Beth for a bit this morning and bought a few tops and a jumper, and took a few more things to be altered. I also went to Internacionale and found a shirt I liked. Everything was on buy one get one half price, so I grabbed a few things and went into the changing room. I didn't like the shirt, but got a lovely red midi skirt. I took it home and my housemate Briony shouted at me because it's far too big for me, so I called them and got them to reserve a smaller size for me to pick up later. It's funny how I always reach for the same size and just presume it will fit. I'm not used to being smaller than I think I am, and I almost always come back with clothes that are too big. I even tried it on in the shop too, but thought the smaller size would be too small. Now I think it will definitely be fine!!

orange skirt- urban outfitters
orange blouse- primark
striped jumper- new look
brown flats- dorothy perkins

Well, I'd better go because I'm off home again for the night. Remember when I crashed my car? Well, I have to go home and take a Driving Proficiency test, despite being the most conscientious driver I know (I know the facts are against me on this one) and then I'm coming straight back tomorrow evening because we're going out for my best friends' Steph and Ed's birthdays and all my friends are coming up!! I'm so excited to catch up with them all- and I may wear my new red skirt!!

Have a fab weekend!!

Zalando Review

A few weeks ago I was contact by the lovely people at Zalando to review a couple of items from their website. I was really excited, but completely and utterly spoiled for choice! While I always thought Zalando specialised in shoes, they also have a lot of lovely clothing too. I decided to select both a pair of shoes and a shirt to review.

As you know I am completely obsessed with leopard print, so both my items were leopard! I chose the Marco Tozzie Ballet Pumps and the S. Oliver Selection blouse.

The shoes are absolutely gorgeous- all-over leopard print with a pointed toe, which makes them really different from a lot of other leopard print shoes I've seen. I've worn them twice on my blog now- they go with everything!

But how much I love the shoes doesn't even compare with how much I love the blouse. It's perfect! It's the perfect brown leopard colour, which goes with everything, and it has a pussy-bow tie, which I adore. I also really love the fact that it is short sleeved- I'm excited to layer under it when it gets colder!

I will definitely be shopping with Zalando again! I am a huge addict to online shopping and now I have a new shop in my repertoire!

And you're tearing up your photos cause you wanna forget it's over

Without sounding too egotistical, I'm starting to feel like every one of my outfits recently has been a new favourite. This was another outfit that I just absolutely loved. I copied the layered maroon top from Sian, who wore this top under her daisy print dress when we went to Crystals and Crumpets. At first, I wasn't completely sold on the competing necklines, but I actually quite like it now. The socks were a last-minute idea, and the hat was actually kind of a joke at first. I'd been a bit upset and my housemate Briony was looking after me in my room when she tried my hat on, so I put it on myself. It was the final addition my outfit needed.

This dress makes me really miss living in America, purely because delivery from Modcloth is absolutely extortionate to the UK. I wish I'd taken advantage of it more when I was over there!! This was my 21st Birthday dress and also the dress I wore when Erick and I went to the Minneapolis sculpture garden, so it always holds happy memories for me. It's a little bit big, but I only realised today that you can tighten the corsetting at the back, so I might be able to adjust it a bit.

Today has been a weird day. I worked until 11pm last night (but it was quite fun- I ended up working with a girl I went to high school with so we were trading gossip from a million years ago, and we also managed to snag some free sandwiches left over from an event upstairs) and then I came home and watched Gok Wan with Beth. I got to bed about 12.30pm and was absolutely exhausted. I've spent the day crying on Briony (it's been one of those days!) writing articles and feeling pretty down and ill and tired. I did drag myself to dancing though and feel so much better because of it. I'm just about to get dressed up and ready now to go out with people on my course. I'm hoping it'll be fun.

dress- Modcloth
maroon top- New Look
shoes- New Look
hat- Marks and Spencers
necklace- New Look

Well, I'm at work all day tomorrow and then dancing so I'll be back on Friday!!
Have a lovely day!!
