I was 15 when I bought my first pair of converse. I'd just started to listen to Green Day and Good Charlotte and Simple Plan and it was the first time in my life when I realised how what you wore could make a statement about who you were. Over the next few years I was to become one of those emo kids who wore red eyeshadow and a My Chemical Romance hoodie to school and a tartan skirt with striped knee socks at the weekend, but this was my first foray into that kind of dressing. I bought them from ebay. Pink converse hi tops. I adored them. I wouldn't even cut the label out of them for fear of ruining their authenticity. I then bought a black pair with pink edging with my first paycheck when I was 16. I remember saying "as soon as I get paid for the first time I'm buying those converse." My first pay didn't even stretch to their price, but I bought them anyway. Then my best friend Jenny and I bought matching black ones with bright coloured graffiti up the back, which we wore consistently through our first year of college. My next pair were green, bought on a trip to Florida when I was 17 when the dollar to pound ratio was so good that I didn't even question the unusual colour choice). For a few years my trainers ended up at the back of my wardrobe with my checkered Vans and old hoodies, but then in summer 2010 I read an article over at College Fashion, around the time I first started writing for them, which completely inspired me to get my converse out again. After an ill-advised attempt to wash my old hitops, which completely ruined them (and the still-intact label), I bought these.

There is something about a pretty dress, a pair of converse and a denim jacket that just screams summer to me. The first time I wore converse on my blog was in the same way. I never get bored of it. We've had a lot of rain and storms over the last week, and I started to think I might need more than my sandals and flip flops for the summer, so after seeing classic black converse on both Annebeth and Olivia's blogs this week, I ordered a pair. I can't wait for them to arrive. I especially love Olivia's pairing with a pretty, fancy dress and a denim jacket. When I get home, I also want to dig out my red converse. My Mum found them for me in TK Maxx years ago, but they're a size and a half too small and I put star-print laces in them. Nothing new laces and a few mangled toes won't fix.

  2. I remember beggin my mum for a pair of Converse, I was in a sort of emo and rock phase back when I was 15, and you just had to have Allstars then. My first pair were grey hi-tops with some pink flowers, and I wore them to death, even though they weren't allowed at our school! Then for my 17th b-day my (now ex-)boyfriend got me a pair of red low tops, and I wore them a lot back then, until I got into my 'all dresses and heels' phase (still am btw, much not so die hard anymore :p) but I recently rediscovered them and now I love them again! They're such a classic and go with sooooo much - I even wore them with a pencil skirt two weeks ago! (You can see it on my blog if you like) Anyway, my comment is way too long again, sorry for that :D You look lovely, Charlotte! xx

  3. converse are the best thing everrrr! I found my first pair in the attic, red high tops that used to belong to my brother. I've had several colors and renditions since then, never stopped loving the look!

  4. I think I got my first pair of Chucks when I was 17, they were light blue. Since then I have always had a pair in my closet. I always feel a bond with people (that sounds so silly) when I see them wearing Chucks. I have had several colors over the years, but never the classic black and white, which is funny because that is prob the color combo most people have. Anyway, love the Chucks!!

  8. Your legs look REALLY good in this!  I mean, they look good in everything, but they look especially good today.  I know you're insecure about them, and you shouldn't be.

It's weird because I imagined the top portion of this outfit in my mind a month or so ago.  I had a photoshoot in mind and NEEDED this outfit to go with it.  I had the denim jacket, I just didn't have the polka dot dress, so I wasn't able to do it.  Ahh well.  I'm sure you pull it off better, anyway.  And I'll always love Converse, even if they aren't made in American anymore.

  10. Your 15 year old self was a lot like me. Converse are certainly a wardrobe staple. The inside of my (now not so) white ones was savaged by my father in laws dogs, but I loathe to let them go!
I love how you've teamed your cons with the dress; it's so pretty!

  14. OMG you just totally described my life!

I got my first pair in 2004 when I was obsessed with Green Day and then this happened:
"I was to become one of those emo kids who wore red eyeshadow and a My Chemical Romance hoodie to school and a tartan skirt with striped knee socks at the weekend"
That was totally me through and through... The red eyeshadow and stripy knee high socks was my signature look. I wore red Stargazer eyeshadow every day from 2004- 2006.

  17. This outfit is perfect! I think you've inspired me to break out my converse again too! I still have my first pair and actually would wear them for marching band practice. My black pair is so old too... but I wear those still occasionally when I have to wear some sort of gym shoe. I almost forgot they could be stylish when paired with other cute things like your dotted dress. I'll definitely be trying this sometime soon!
