Making My Own Luck

Not my best outfit photos ever, or my least-squinty face, but hey, I took outfit photos. In New Jersey. What up. You see that crazy stuff going on in the background? That's the waterpark where I work! These were taken right outside my house, so when I said I lived near where I worked, I wasn't lying! I snapped these this morning (after walking round the block trying to find a good photo spot) before it started to rain. I really wanted to go down to the pier today to take pictures, but the weather has been rubbish. I manage to go to the bank to open my account before it started raining, but I got a little wet going to the grocery store, mainly because I forgot where the grocery store was and completely missed the turn. I walked about another 15 minutes before I thought, wait, I'm sure it's not this far away!

This was actually the outfit I wore last night too. Yesterday was all kinds of crazy. I decided to get the bus to the mall. The first bus I planned to get I missed, so I nipped to CVS to kill some time and planned on getting the next one, which I thought was in an hour. It wasn't. It was in nearly 2 hours. Once I'd finally found the bus stop it was only about a 15 minute wait and at 1.15pm I finally made it to the mall. The mall was good, except for the fact I kindasorta shouted at the staff in AT&T thinking it was their fault my iPhone wasn't working (turns out I'd just gone waaaay over my allowance and 3 had cut me off!). There's a F21 and a Charlotte Russe and they're opening a H&M soon, so I'm pretty happy. They also have a little Sephora in JC Penney. I got everything I needed, but coming back was a nightmare. I thought I could get the bus at 3.15pm, assuming I could get the bus leaving where I'd picked it up at 2.54pm. Turns out, there is no 2.54pm bus. I waited around 30 minutes with no sign of a bus before I started to panic. I was going out at 5 and wanted enough time to get ready, allowing for the 30 minute journey. To cut a long story short, I called a taxi, and while I waiting inside for it (it was cold!), the bus drove past. Typical. Luckily I had come to the mall with one of my housemates and he turned up as I was waiting so we got the taxi together. For some reason, though, I found the whole situation of feeling stranded at the mall very upsetting and I ended up in tears on the phone to my parents. I think it's just the stress of being somewhere new, but I feel so silly now that I was so upset!

By yesterday evening though, the stress of the day had been well and truly forgotten. I met up with a few people from work who I had met at my training to go to an event at the pier. At the pier, as well as the waterpark, there is an arcade and a small themepark, and last night all employees were allowed the themepark to themselves. It was so much fun. There were only maybe 30 or so of us there, so we had the whole park to ourselves. We went on the bumper cars, the mouse trap rollercoaster, the enterprise, the haunted house, the go karts... so much fun! We even got free pizza and a drink! At the end of the night I finally plucked up enough courage to go on the Skyscraper ride. You can read a little more about it here, but basically they spin you around half a dozen times and then you get thrown up into the air 160ft spinning around at 70 miles an hour. It was terrifying when I was waiting to go on, but it was incredible! Afterwards a group of us went to get dippin' dots (my first time having them!) and walked along the boardwalk. It was so nice to feel like I belong here now. Everyone loves my accent and everyone was fighting over who got to sit with me on each of the rides which made me feel so special, and they asked me to say "Harry Potter" a million times, but it was so fun. I've even been speaking to my housemates more and hung out with them for the night on Sunday. I'm sure there are still going to be good days and bad days, but I'm doing okay. I even posted on Facebook earlier asking if anyone wanted to take me to a movie tonight and one of the guys in my training group said he would take me, so we're going to a chinese buffet and then to see Madagascar 3. Sometimes you have to put yourself out there and take a leap of faith, even if it's something as silly as asking on Facebook if someone wants to hang out. You make your own luck.

I'm going to try to take photos again over the next few days because after Friday, I'm working 9 days in a row so I need to make the most of my days off! I'm excited to start work properly though! I'm also working at the World's Largest Swimming Lesson at work on Thursday which should be fun, and I think after work we're trying out all the slides!

I hope you're having a lovely day!

  4. Ooh I love seeing pictures from New Jersey! Really nice outfit, and it's lovely to read what you've been up to all day! Good that you found a spot to take pictures, I always struggle with finding a place that isn't too crowded but still pretty :/ Enjoy your time off! Although working will surely be fun too ;)
PS: the Harry Potter thing really made me laugh, reminds me of years ago when I was on holiday with my family, and we were at the (sort of) bar of the hotel playing the Harry Potter game I got for my bday, and suddenly a British couple came over, all excited, going like "OMG it's a Harry Potter game! a Harry Potter game! Look at that!" :D we still joke about it from time to time :)
sorry for my way too long comment :D xx

  5. Oh gosh, no, I can see why you cried about the mall! My first year of college in Idaho, the second week of school, I went to the mall with some of my new "friends" and they left me there while I was in the bathroom. (Nightmare bullying moment, really.) It was 30 miles from our school and I didn't know anything about where I was, nor did I know anyone else in about a 700 mile radius. I had to call my mom and have her call me a taxi. I cried the entire time and when the taxi driver met me at the mall and heard my story, he said he refused to charge me, so I got a free taxi back to my school. So no -- feeling stranded in a place you don't really know is potentially the worst feeling in the world. I'm glad you're having a better time otherwise, though!

I actually really love these pictures though and this outfit!

  6. Ahhh sounds like you're having a pretty amazing time.  I would never ever have the guts to do what you're doing but it's definitely inspiring!  I love your outfit, especially the Converse!

  7. The fact that we have the same weather is really cool to me! Ugh your bus adventure sounds completely frustrating. I remember relying on the bus and completely hating it. It seems like you've got some ups and downs but are keeping on a happy face. I love that they made you say Harry Potter...that is hilarious.

  9. Ahhh you're in Jersey? I live in Jersey. For a second there, when I read about the mall you went to, I thought you were staying somewhere in a town over from my town, and got extremely excited. Because, the mall you described is pretty much an accurate description of the mall by where I live. But then, I realized you were at the shore. Regardless, how long are you staying?

  10. Yep I'm in Jersey for the summer. I'm in Seaside Heights until September and then I'm going travelling. The mall I went to was Ocean County Mall if that's any help! x

  12. I'm sorry and apologize for my fellow strange New Jersey citizens asking you to say Harry Potter and such. I am kind of surprised they would do that considering that New Jersey is pretty close to New York City and you hear ALL KINDS of accents there. I guess it wouldn't phase me to hear you speak because I grew up with people that lived down the street who came from England, ones from Switzerland, ones from Poland, ones from Italy, and ones from India.  My parents were friends with people from Scotland, a few people I know married people from England, so it doesn't phase me to hear it. I've been around so many accents all my life.

You're by Seaside Heights right? If I ever go to visit my Aunt and Uncle and cousins again sometime soon who live near there in Toms River, I'll try to check out this water park and look for you.

Sorry it has been so rainy here lately. It really has been pretty BLAH.

I haven't been to Casino Pier since I was about 14 but I always loved the little haunted house ride, but it got boring as I got older. . . since I knew it too well. Do they still have the log flume there? That was the only thing I really liked to go on, otherwise Seaside Heights bores me because I went too often!!!!

  13. I really love the color palette of this outfit.  I seem to be gravitating towards pastel this summer so this outfit is really up my alley.        Sorry you had to deal with the whole bus issue.  It took me forever to figure out public transportation in Jersey.  Oh and think you should record yourself saying Harry Potter. I want to hear it!

  14. I'm glad things are starting to get more exciting and better. Also, I might ask you to say "Harry Potter" a few times if I ever see you in person too. I seriously wish I had a British accent. They're basically the coolest ever.
Also, you look adorable! That peplum top is awesome and such a great color. I'm loving your mint jeans too.
