20 Things I'm going to Miss About America when I go Home

With my departure from the US for the Christmas holidays quickly approaching, I have decided to do what I do best- make lists. This list is going to be of all the things I'm going to miss about America when I get home, and the second will be all the things I'm excited about when I get home. I've decided to do this one first as I'm sure I'll just end up getting too excited about coming home!! I would like to point out that I'm pretty sure some of these lists are going to be a little contradictory, but hey, I'm a complex girl.

1. American Accents
I am such a sucker for American accents, but I've kinda become acclimatised to them now. I will definitely miss them when I get back to everyone sounding like me.

2. Using "I'm British!!" as an excuse for everything
I use this all the time. When I don't understand, when I don't want to understand, when I do something stupid. This works everytime. And I love it.

3. Free Gym
Aah I love it so much. I am probably going to have to join a gym when I get home after enjoying the delights for free.

4. Peanut Butter Cups

The only American chocolate that could ever rival Cadburys. Peanut Butter Cups are divine. I will have to stock-up on them, or spend every penny I have buying them in Selfridges for three-times the price.

5. Hot Apple Cider
As I mentioned at the start of the week, this sweet apple-y lovliness is the dream!!

6. Exciting post
As much as I hate the long, cold walk to get my parcels, I love getting an exciting package in the post!!

7. Being different
It gets frustrating at times, but most of the time I love being different. People come and talk to me just because I'm British. I love that I stand out for being different here.

8. Freely browsing American websites
I love that I can now shop at Forever 21 and browse Modcloth and I could actually buy something!!

9. Free buses
Free buses are the best invention ever. I hate the thought of actually paying for a bus when I get home!! And when I don't get the bus there's always...

10. Lifts everywhere
Everyone has a car here, which is great for me in that most people will pick you up and drive you to where you want to go!! I love getting picked up- especially in the cold. As great as free buses are, nothing beats a nice warm car, and not having to wait for it.

11. Coldstone Ice cream

Okay, my usual Coldstone is shut now for winter, but I know the one at the mall is still there if I get a craving :]]] Americans really do do ice cream well!!

12. UMD merchandise

I plan on going wild before I leave here. I almost bought a scarf today!! I am definitely stocking up on hoodies before I go. But I may pass on the UMD snuggie.

13. Randomly seeing deer
I never see anything more exciting than a fox at home. Here deer just run out into the road or walk along the pavement. It's so weird!!

14. My Column
I love seeing my writing published every single week- it's so exciting!! My column is mentioned on the cover this week, which is really exciting!! I also love that people know me as The Girl Next Door too!!

15. How anything vaguely British is exciting
Cadbury's chocolate in the supermarket, the British Aisle at Cub Foods, anyone British on the TV...

16. How Americans just want to be friends with you
Whenever someone says "we should definitely do that!!" I've started to take them up on it, and I'm so glad that I have. People here are much less reserved than us Brits and actually like making friends with strangers, which is good for me when I'm always looking for new friends!!

17. Sending people things
I love sending people cards and presents, even though they take forever to arrive!! The cards in the bookshop are so cute so I love sending them to people.

18. Bad American TV
I am now shamelessly addicted to Sixteen and Pregnant. Now Teen Mom has finished.

29. Getting UK and US Glamour
I get US at the start of the month and then my mum sends me UK when she sends me things from home. Double Glamour= the dream

20. How exciting England seems to be

Being away from home just makes everything about it seem much more exciting than it probably is. I miss daft things that I never really appreciated at home. Being here makes me realise how much I love England, but I'm sure I'll be sick of it again as soon as I get back!!

  3. I'm Canadian, but I used to live just over the border from Minnesota, in Manitoba, and this list has really made me miss a lot of things from there! Coldstone Creamery really is amazing :)

  4. Free buses? Gurl, where you finding the free buses at? I thought you had to pay. Or do students get to ride the bus for free? I'm not sure. I have a car, thank God.

I think every place has its pluses and minuses. Unfortunately, living on campus and only really experiencing "college America" isn't quite an accurate portrayal of the country. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, so I'll just stop now.

Thanks for the award, by the way! I really appreciate it!

  5. I agree with Ashley. One's opinion of America would be very different if you spent most of your time in San Fransisco versus San Antonio or Daytona.

Where I am we have a few buses, but honestly I've never ridden one here and don't know how much. When I was in school the University bus was free, but most aren't. It's debatable if it's a plus or minus, but unless you are in place like New York, Chicago, etc. then you need a car to be independent. Driving is one of the things that I love about where I live. It's been too long since I've been on a random road trip.

As for accents, I do wonder if northern accent versus a southern accent would sound much different to the British. At first I had a hard time distinguishing British from Australian until I had met more Aussies. I've got a friend who lives in Saskatchewan who says he likes my accent but has a think about it a minute to understand me too...and he ends every other sentence with "Eh?". Looks like I need to call him tonight...
